Coffee & Creativity

Coffee and Creativity with a Dancer

This week I’m talking about combing three of my absolute passions;

  • wellbeing
  • the arts
  • creative freedom for children.

I’ve had the opportunity to work on lots of really amazing projects and events for families and young children in the last few years and now my little one is 3, it’s an area I am increasingly fascinated with as we use our creativity together more and more.

There’s been a big shift here in the North East in the last few years with lots of brilliant parents and artists putting together programmes which are thoughtfully curated to entertain parents and celebrate their children’s creativity at the same time! Plus we have Seven Stories, the national centre for Children’s Books right here in Newcastle!

I met with Lynn Campbell to talk about all of the above and all things ‘Yoga Babies’ at the enchanting Barter Books in Alnwick by the fire in the Blue room!

It was a morning meeting and I got there a little early and realised I hadn’t had breakfast (again) so got their porridge and toast combo with my cuppa!  I have never had anything other than utterly delicious to eat at their Buffet Restaurant – I think it’s my favourite cafe in the world! Or maybe a close second to that one in Bali that time?!

Lynn is one third of North East based Bare Todd Dance Company (an early years dance company) and we’ve had the opportunity to work with each other lots of time before on really lovely projects for children.

Lynn is very supportive of collaborating with children to inform event material and I met with her to talk through the event plan and the Yoga sequence I’ve put together inspired by Fearne Cotton’s book Yoga Babies which has the most adorable and thoughtful illustrations by Sheena Dempsey.

I practised Yoga all through my pregnancy and me and L took Toddler Yoga classes with my local teacher Lucy so as soon as I received an early proof of the book in the post I was so excited about it.

I’m genuinely delighted Fearne Cotton is bringing Yoga into a more accessible space for children and I’d love to see the book gifted to every mum who gives birth! If anyone’s listening ?? – we don’t need that voucher pack or contraceptive marketing spam! Give us Yoga!!

The book’s publisher Anderson Press who are very forward thinking and I are looking at an event tour in Spring to celebrate the book and Yoga which came out in hard back last year. The events are aimed at children under 5 in pre school or with their grown-ups.

There are already dates confirmed in the North East and London and there’ll be even more to add!

What’s really brilliant about creative minds coming together is that you have at least triple the opportunity to make something really magical happen! I always absolutely adore collaborating with like minded people and much prefer it to working alone.

I’m not going to give too much away about the events but safe to say, it’s going to be one of those which delights both children and their grown ups in equal measure!!

To find out more watch this space as I’ll be shouting big shouts for this one!!
